Poker rules

Poker is the world's favourite card game and there are many varietions of the game. However, all these variations of poker have the same basic rules.

Basic rules

All poker games use a standard deck of 52 cards. The cards are ranked as follows: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, A. Note that the Ace counts both as highest and lowest card. There is no difference in value of any one suit (Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs or Spades).

The aim of the game is to have the best hand of cards. Winning hands are (in order of rank):

In case two players have the same hand (for example both players have Four of a Kind), the player with the highest card wins.

Royal Flush

A Royal Flush is the best poker hand, the Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10. It does not matter of which suit as long as all cards are of the same suit.


Straight Flush

A Straight Flush is a poker hand of fivw cards in ascending order and in the same suit. For example Queen, Jack, 10, 9 and 8 of Diamonds.


Four of a Kind

Four cards of the same value. For example four Kings.


Full House

A hand where you have three of a kind and a pair. For example three Aces and two Jacks.


Flush

Five cards of the same suit but not in ascending order. For example a 2, 5, 6, Jack and Ace of Diamonds.


Straight

Five cards of different suits but in ascending order. For example 8 of Diamonds, 9 of Hearts, 10 of Spades, Jack of Hearts and a Queen of Clubs.


Three of a Kind

Three cards of the same value. For example three Kings.


Two Pair

Two sets of two cards with the same value. For example two 10s and two Kings.


One Pair

One set of two cards of the same value. For example two Queens.
